Trevor Daniel has proved to be one of this year’s most exciting artists. His most recent EP ‘That Was Then’ birthed the runaway hit ‘Falling’ which currently sits at over 260 views on YouTube and the whole EP is an exciting exploration of who he is as an artist. Tracks such as Toxxxic, Now We’re Done and Thirsty show off how versatile Trevor’s songwriting skills can be and remain FAULT Favourite tracks nearly a year after releasing. We sat down with the artist to find out more about his music, his journey and of course, his FAULTs.

Now that ‘That Was Then’ has had time to marinate with listeners, do you feel you accomplished everything you want to with the album?

The idea of the last EP was to really just cute people to see that I can make more than just sad songs. Sure there were sad songs on there but I tried to include a few other different styles as well that I plan on expanding on in the future. so I would say yes. I just wanted to add some flavour – cause honestly, I felt bored with my music.

Did all the buzz around the EP add extra pressure to live up to the hype with future releases?

not really. I just wanted to release something a bit different & have it not be so polished. it has already been a year since my last release, so this was fun to just make music and not think much about it as far as structure or the unspoken rules of songwriting goes. I just made these with my friends. mostly my best friends Vino and Friday.

Are you quite disciplined and regimented when writing or do you prefer to wait for inspiration to hit?

it really just depends. I go through phases of both sides where I want to wait for inspiration and then other times I like to just listen to people talk and then write songs about that. The one thing that’s consistent is I just like making music so whether or not I had been through something song worthy doesn’t really change my perspective on writing. some songs just hit different because I was in that exact mood right when I recorded it. but I’m really all over the place. I just like making shit that makes people feel something.

When you’re in writing mode, are you an artist that likes to shut off from the world and not take in anything else in case it distracts your flow or do you like to take it all in?

I know this is a pretty broad answer but it really just depends. A lot of the time I feel like I make the best stuff whenever I do shut off from the world but if I don’t go out and get inspiration I start getting in a loop where I feel like everything sounds the same. so I like to break off and do things outside of music every now and then. but I really like going with the flow most of the time.

What’s an experience you haven’t written about yet but really want to?

I write about everything I want to write about usually. so it’s probably an experience I haven’t had yet.

What’s something no one has ever asked you but is something you’ve always wanted to say about your music?

I want someone to ask me something like “damn Trevor why are you so fucking dope, like how do we get as cool as you” just so I can answer “shit…. idk”

When you look back on your musical journey, what is the largest hurdle you’d had to climb?

I think the largest hurdle I’ve had to climb is having people believe in me when I have weird ideas or want to go for something that’s non-conventional. it’s always hard for a creative at least the real ones to mix in the ass-kissing of the business side with the art and push limits… when until the limits are pushed no one knows if these things are going to sell. and believe me, I’ve been EXTREMELY mild. I haven’t pushed any buttons yet.

What are you most looking forward to in 2022?

Pushing buttons.

What is your FAULT?

I feel like I’ve spent the last few years being quiet, and not speaking my mind/taking in too many opinions vs just trusting my gut. I’m also looking forward to fixing that in 2022. all I can say is this new music is about to hit different.
