Despite his young age, Spencer Sutherland has been grinding away at his craft for many years. Regardless of what part of his musical journey fans discovered him, his ability to write music which resonates with his listeners has always been his strength. Releasing his runaway hits ‘Tell Me’, ‘Fine’ and ‘Sweater’ last year displayed in full just how are great and dynamic his vocal range can be. Returning last week with a new music video for his brand new single ‘Help’, we caught up with Spencer for a self shot feature to discuss his process, life in lockdown and of course, his FAULTs.

What’s something new you’ve learned about yourself whilst self-isolating?

Spencer Sutherland: I’ve learned a new level of patience. When the world has no choice but to FULLY stop, you have to stop with it. My mind has strengthed from self-isolation.

In your Youtube video, ‘My show got cancelled’ you documented all the emotion of having your show cancelled. Obviously it was such a hard situation which many don’t talk about. Was it hard for you to be so open?

Spencer Sutherland: It wasn’t that hard to talk about because I like to share all of my feelings with my fans. It probably was easier because I wasn’t the only one suffering because of the pandemic, EVERYONE was.

Your career hasn’t been a straight line, how do you stay positive when you hit bumps in the road?

Spencer Sutherland: To be honest I don’t exactly know! I think I just focus on other things to get me through a bumpy time. I have an awesome group of people around me to keep me positive which is really awesome as well.

What would you say has been the hardest hurdle you’ve had to climb on your musical journey?

Spencer Sutherland: The mental struggle. It started the day I started this as a career and will last my entire life. No matter what happens, I’ll always have my anxiety there, but I’m learning every day to deal with it better & better!

What’s something no journalist has ever asked you but is something you’ve always wanted to say?

Spencer Sutherland: Would you rather live in a massive mansion and stay there OR a studio apartment but travel the world? (I would travel the world)

What is your FAULT?

Spencer Sutherland: I probably get too emotionally involved with work. I am so attached to each tour, every song and even business stuff. I guess that’s why I have people that help make me make bigger decisions lol. I am an emotional guy what can I say.
