Klosetslayer: New designer spotlight

Klosetslayer is an independent, unisex label founded by Marcia Arnsparger Santiago. Since its launch in 2014, the New Jersey-based brand has been lauded for both its custom clothing and its ready to wear line (which saw Klosetslayer nominated for a Ready to Wear Designer of the Year Award). Klosetslayer prides itself on its inclusive image, with styles that cater to both men and women of all body types. It’s a philosophy that has seen the team travel across the US to participate in runway shows from New York to Ohio to Florida. Marcia’s approach to custom designing new pieces means that Klosetslayer has enormous widespread appeal – to the point where notable influencers (such as Fashion Bomb Daily founder Claire Sulmers) have been in touch to request their own personalized looks.

FAULT: What was your main inspiration behind Klosetslayer?

Klosetslayer: I wanted to create things that I wish existed but could never be found by pushing the bar and encouraging individuality and self expression with no boundaries.

Can you tell us about some of the unique features of the label?

Klosetslayer: My brand caters to men and women of all sizes. That’s extremely important to me. I want everyone to feel confident wearing Klosetslayer and to never have to worry about not being able to find something in their size, which is why we are such strong promoters of self-love and body positivity. I want my pieces to instill confidence and leave an impression.

What/who are the main influences behind your collection – if any?

Klosetslayer: My new collection, ‘Category’, was inspired by the late Hector Xtravaganza. I admire his daring creations. He constantly pushed the limit with his truly iconic pieces.

Is there a particular process you follow when designing?

Klosetslayer: Fabric shopping is always my first step. Once I come across the fabric that speaks to me, the ideas just start flowing. I only sketch a design after I’ve purchased the fabric and envisioned the creation in my head.

Tell us about your latest collection?

Klosetslayer: My latest collection is full of leather, skulls, lace and complete edginess for both women and men. I kept classic with a twist of ’80s influences. I fully expressed myself in this collection with no limits.

Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?

Klosetslayer: I don’t have a favorite piece because I really poured my heart into making the ‘Category’ collection and I’m absolutely in love with each and every design from it. However, I can say this is by far my favorite collection of those that I’ve made so far.

Who would be your dream client to design for/work with? Both in terms of your day to day ideal customer and a potential red carpet customer?

Klosetslayer: I have actually already accomplished that goal. I was honored with the opportunity to design a custom piece for the creator of Fashion Bomb Daily, Claire Sulmers, for her to wear at Paris Fashion Week. I have been extremely lucky with the clientele that I’ve had the pleasure of working with, ranging from fashion influencers to reality stars. It’s truly humbling.

What are you currently working on?

Klosetslayer: Right now I’m working on custom orders for multiple clients, as well as my loungewear collection. The latter features Klosetslayer logo t-shirts, joggers and hoodies for comfortable everyday wear.

What are your plans to expand the line? Where does Klosetslayer go from here?

Klosetslayer: I’m going to continue building the Klosetslayer brand by showcasing it at fashion weeks around the United States and venturing international. I plan on perfecting my passion while continuing to create for and cater to my clients. I’m blessed with an amazing team so the sky’s the limit. We definitely plan on making our mark in the fashion world.

What is your FAULT?

Klosetslayer: My FAULT is that I’m a perfectionist. Each and every detail on a garment that I designed has to be exactly what I envisioned. Otherwise, I will start over however many times it takes to achieve the desired effect.
