Tell us about Allan’s Grand Day Out, how did you meet and start making music?

We are Bryn White and Zoë Klinck and we met in the winter of 2008 at Wimbledon College of Art where we study Design for Performance. We were both on the prowl for some musical collaboration and luckily we bumped into each other. We started recording in Bryn’s bedroom in Streatham and never looked back.

What is your musical background?

Bryn was in a few bands at school as a guitarist and Zoë did some work as a backing and session singer. Since we met we’ve pushed ourselves beyond those rolls, we’re both doing a lot of different things which is great fun, and makes the music a lot more interesting and challenging for us.

How has 2010 been for you?

It’s been a wonderful year, we’ve come on in leaps and bounds. We spent 4 months in Holland in a very isolated town called Maastricht, which allowed us to really focus on music. The experience made a huge difference to our sound. We couldn’t take much with us so the only instruments we had were a guitar, a melodica and a glockenspiel. Improvising, we started hitting or shaking anything we could get our hands on: pots, pans, paracetamol packets, make-up, you name it. This inadvertently created the sound we now champion. Our manager found us on myspace in the Spring and has been fantastic, instilling a lot of confidence in us.

What sets you apart from other artists?

We like to think of our sound as hand-made electronica. We are always scouring car-boot sales in search of new things to create noises with. We like the weird and the wonderful but also love a good pop song and will never shy away from that. We dabble in theatrical sound-tracking which opens up a host of other musical tests and inspirations. In August we took a show to the Edinburgh Fringe with some friends. At the moment we’re working on a piece called Keep Moving as part of our degree. It’s inspired by a Dr Seuss story, and we’re getting into some crazy soundscapes.

Do you have any live shows coming up?

Yes! We’re headlining Brick Lane’s 93 Feet East on the 14th December. After that we’re playing at Babalou in Brixton on the 25th February, which is conveniently situated 100 yards from our front door! There’s a nation-wide tour on the cards too.

What are you looking forward to in 2011?

Finishing our degrees and going full-tilt for the music.

We love the track Empty, what is the story behind the song?

This is the first song we worked on together. It started out as a Minimal track in tribute to our friend Tom then it blossomed into a very different song. We re-vamped it in Holland. It’s about the fear of loneliness within a big city.

Do you have a creative input when it comes to artwork and videos?

Thus far we have done it all ourselves, so yes! Being soon-to-be graduates in a BA in Design, we hope to continue doing as much as possible ourselves, although we’re always up for collaborations.

What is your FAULT?

It’s Bryn’s FAULT that there are so many kid’s drum kits.
Bryn’s FAULT is an insuppressible adoration for Chinese waving golden cats.
It’s Zoë’s FAULT that the scrambled eggs contained coriander instead of parsley.
Zoë’s FAULT is an irrational repulsion towards mistletoe when it grows in trees.
