NYFW Review (Sept ’13): Tommy Hilfiger’s SS14 ‘Westcoasting’ show
Tommy Hilfiger presented his new womenswear collection for the upcoming Spring/Summer ’14 season during New York Fashion Week. The set was completely inspired by the beach: sand on the floor, wood on the runway, surfboards, blue sky and the feeling of being somewhere in California. That’s why the show started with a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers whose singer, Anthony Kiedis, was seated in the front row.
There was no doubt that the main theme of the show was the Golden State, with a collection full of strong, intense colors and very sportive details, which spoke of the youthful spirit of the West Coast of the USA. Following this motif, Hilfiger also added Hawaiian prints and neoprene fabrics to give the surf and skate sensation – so typical of the lifestyle of that part of the world.
Once sport and optimism had been represented, the best way to finish was with a world famous song that everybody knows: ‘Surfin’ USA’ by the Beach Boys. Right after the show, this writer moved on to the next show thinking that I was in LA before belatedly remembering that I was back in New York after an intriguing and absorbing runway experience.
