Together with Dennis Adamidis from House of Vintage, our very own chief stylist Tallulah Harlech has created a stunning vintage editorial for Issue 10 of FAULT Magazine. We’re proudly revealing some of the shots that didn’t make it into the printed issue, but were just too beautiful to be kept a secret from you.

London-based vintage expert Samaya Ling shared her comments on the shoot and provided some tips on how to perfect the look (below).  Enjoy!

 

Shine On…

Glittering black 1970s sequin gown, halter neck sleeveless bodice with ivory flower applique, elegant glamour, no jewellery required.

This is a perfect example of ’70s does Art Deco – you’ll find full length sequin gowns showing up in almost every decade after the 1920s. The beauty of a ’70s sequin dress is that it will be strong & wearable – some of the 1930s sequin pieces are very delicate.

 

Hold Tight…

 Zigzag worked sequin mini dress, a perfect LSD. Vintage 1980s, high necked with cut away sleeves – just add stilettos.

This look is very (early) Alaia in style, he was known as the ‘King Of Cling’ in the 1980s – and along with Herve Leger celebrated women’s curves with their body conscious short dresses…

 

Be A Princess…

A 1970s apricot sequin- and silver-beaded shift dress by Oleg Cassini,  the ultimate in perfect glamour – again all you need add are killer shoes.

 Oleg Cassini is famous for a number of achievements, including dressing Jackie Kennedy (and creating ‘The Jackie Look’), for designing dresses for his one time fiance, Grace Kelly, and for being the single most important bridal designer in America…

 

Go East…

 An incredible block print 1930s silk crepe Kimono, worn open with vintage box shape clutch bag.

A beautiful look and so simple to achieve. Vintage Kimono’s in all lengths, prints and colours can be found at Fuji‘s stand at The London Vintage Fashion Fair every month or at Fuji’s website: www.fujikimono.co.uk. The best Kimonos are hand painted and always silk – wear over skinnies and camisoles in the day or as a body con dress by night…

 

Drop In…

 A 1980s soft grey wrap dress, bias cut with puff sleeves.

 Diane Von Furstenberg is the ultimate in wrap dresses (to this day), it’s getting harder to find vintage DVF wrap dresses but not impossible – there is a collection of vintage pieces on the DFV website to start with, which are beautiful to wear. This wrap around style first emerged in the late 1930s and early 1940s – mainly as glamorous lounge wear (aka house coats). Accessorize with an oversized handbag and smooth hair.

 

And Be A Star!

A high-waisted vintage 1990s navy pinstripe suit by Chloe (probably from the Karl Lagerfeld years), wonderful button-up details on the cuffs, worn here with a Mongolian lambswool bomber jacket, ca. 1970s.

This stunning look features easy to source vintage pieces too, ’80s & ’90s suits would show similar cuts (and the 80s were heavily inspired by the 1940s, so you could go right back) and for fur or Mongolian bomber jackets head to any retro shop and go through the rails… Perfect make up is a must!
