Make-up Artist – Melissa Walsh
Celebrity Make-up Artist Melissa Walsh originally from London is now based in Los Angeles California. Melissa began her career by testing with music photographer Peter Anderson. She has since then worked with such internationally known artists as Depeche Mode, Ringo Starr and Blondie. Melissa also works with numerous celebrities, her work has also been featured in editorials, magazine covers and ad campaigns. FAULT had the great pleasure of working with Melissa on a recent shoot.
FAULT: Melissa can you tell us about your background, when and where did you start your career?
Melissa: As a child I was always drawing faces and putting makeup on anyone who’d sit still long enough. I used to do before and after school on my friends and take photos so it was something that I always loved to do.
FAULT: What inspired you to become a make-up artist?
Melissa: I used to read every magazine I could get hold of and copy the makeup looks on myself or friends. One day it occurred to me I could do this for a living!
FAULT: What made you decide to move from the UK to Los Angeles?
Melissa: Apart from the weather?! I felt I had gone as far as I could in London and that opportunities were greater here even if I had to start from the bottom again.
FAULT: How does the industry differ in LA vs London?
Melissa: In LA it is far more celebrity based. I find that I do more makeup for events and red carpet as there is always something going on.
FAULT: Do you have a preference of doing print, film or television make-up?
Melissa: I prefer print as I get to be more creative.
FAULT: What’s been the most standout moment/job of your career thus far?
Melissa: It has to be going on world tour with Vanessa Mae!
FAULT: Who would be your dream client and why?
Melissa: Hilary Swank, I think she is beautiful but doesn’t like a lot of makeup which is my specialty and a 2 time Oscar winner so extremely talented too!
FAULT: What’s your favourite aspect about your job?
Melissa: Meeting amazing people and traveling to places I might not see otherwise.
FAULT: What are some of your must have products?
Melissa: I can’t do my job without Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint – it makes everyone’s skin glow, Korres Mascara – the best I’ve ever used, Talika Eye Therapy Patches – they smooth out fine lines, a quick fix for tired puffy eyes, Covergirl Line Exact Eyeliner – an inexpensive and easy to use liquid liner, Vanity Mark Summerskin Body Bronzer, it gives a glow and covers imperfections on the legs.
FAULT: How do you define beauty?
Melissa: Being the best you can be inside and out!
FAULT: What are you currently working on?
Melissa: I work constantly with my regular client Terri Seymour and also am working on a series of pictures of icons from TV and film from the 60’s – 80’s. I’m also doing a fair amount of editorial.
FAULT: What is your FAULT?
Melissa: Not taking time for myself, I’ve been known to cancel vacations for a job!
