Google says that although it is “continuing to experiment with the large touchscreen and tablet form factor” this new interface will give the user a full screen compose window instead of splitting the screen between the inbox and the compose view.
This means that instead of having a lots of messages displayed along the side, Google has removed this ‘distracting’ feature so it is more like the compose element of the web app version for Gmail or Android.
This new interface is only available in US English for now and also fixes the previous problem that prevented scrolling when composing long messages.
