Pool Girl, aka LA-based soundscaper Allie Nixon, returns with Ultramarine – a dreamy, four-track EP that broadens her sonic palette while maintaining the dreamy shimmer that defined her 2024 debut, Trophy Wife. Where her earlier work flirted with nostalgic indie-pop, ‘Ultramarine’ dives headfirst into more ambient, experimental waters.

There’s a striking cohesion to this release. Tracks flow seamlessly, as if carried by an underwater current – a fitting metaphor all-round, given the artist’s pseudonym and the EP’s immersive soundscape. Nixon leans into contrast, with analogue piano and digital textures working side by side, as her soft vocals carry through each track. The lead single ‘Better Days’, rooted in a raw personal conversation and underscored by a nod to Debussy’s Clair de Lune, showcases this balance perfectly. It’s a vulnerable, beautifully crafted track that captures the spirit of the whole EP: introspective and cinematic.

What sets Ultramarine apart is its clarity of vision. The EP’s title, Latin for “beyond the sea”, feels apt for a project that sounds both earthly and otherworldly.

With executive production from Californian maestro Michl on her upcoming full-length, it’s clear Pool Girl is headed somewhere exciting If Trophy Wife introduced a promising new artist, Ultramarine goes some lengths towards affirming as a storyteller and producer worth watching.
