The Moss signals a bold evolution with their latest single ‘Darkness‘, released via S-Curve Records. The song delivers powerful energy while staying grounded in the band’s familiar blend of indie rock and warm, rhythmic songwriting. As the first in a series of upcoming releases, it sets a promising tone for what’s to come.

“‘Darkness’ is written as this cyclical thought of caring deeply about someone but needing space from them to sort out your own emotions,” shares Tyke James, the band’s lead vocalist.

‘Darkness’ opens with a quick, rhythmic hook that feels instantly catchy. The vocals are front and center, delivering a sense of urgency while maintaining a melodic quality. The blend of styles is noticeable without being overdone. There’s a touch of disco in the beat, a steady indie-rock core, and some sharp guitar work that drives the track forward. The chorus – “Lately I’m just tired / of darkness all the time / I can’t even close my eyes / But I know the sun will rise / If I make it through the night” – is one of the strongest parts of the song.

As the song progresses, it continues to build without becoming overwhelming. The backing vocals add texture and help lift the single without pulling focus from the lead. There’s evidence of excellent planning, tight production and structure with this release: everything fits together seamlessly. There are many small choices, shifts in rhythm, subtle melodic changes, and layered harmonies that come together cohesively. It’s a track that holds attention from start to finish.

The Moss formed in Oahu, where Tyke James and Addison Sharp began making music together before moving to Salt Lake City and teaming up with Willie Fowler and Caiden Jackson. Their sound draws influence from artists like Pinegrove and Kevin Morby, but they’ve built something that feels personal and consistent.

Throughout the year, the band have maintained a strong presence, performing over 50 headlining shows and steadily growing their audience, now surpassing 75 million streams across platforms. Their momentum has also taken them to major festivals, including Bottlerock, Levitate, Ohani, and Paradies, where they shared the stage with artists like Briston Maroney.
