Best known to audiences as the lovable Gavin from the iconic British sitcom Gavin and Stacey, Matthew Horne captured hearts with his charm, wit, and impeccable comedic talent. The show, a cultural touchstone for fans around the globe, will conclude with a Christmas special, promised to be the perfect ending for one of Britain’s most beloved TV couples.

However, the excitement doesn’t end there for Matthew. As the allure of live theatre calls, he currently stars in Jamie Lloyd’s ambitious staging of The Tempest. We sat down with Matthew Horne to discuss the role, his illustrious career, and, of course, his FAULTs.

What can people expect from the Christmas special?

They can expect the perfect ending to a very long tale of love, friendship, and family. I’m really proud of it. I didn’t write it, but the quality of the script speaks for itself. It’s the perfect ending on paper, and I think audiences will feel the same when they see it.

Was it emotional knowing this was the closing chapter?

I wouldn’t say it was hard, but it was emotionally charged. After 17 years, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of significance.

Working with people I’ve known since the beginning made it bittersweet. Many of the crew members were there in 2007 for Series 1. There’s a deep sense of family, on and off screen. That emotional weight made it all the more meaningful.

You’ve played this character for so long. Has the role ever felt limiting or defined your career in ways you didn’t expect?

I wouldn’t say limiting, but there’s no question that the character has defined my career and life so far. That’s something to celebrate. As an actor, it’s rare to be part of something so meaningful to so many people. I’m extremely grateful for that.

What excited you most about this project?

It was like the perfect job. I was about to start filming Gavin and Stacey, but I really wanted to do some theatre this year.

When Jamie’s team reached out, I thought, “This is ideal.” It’s not just any play; it’s the theatre event of the year, with Sigourney Weaver, no less! It was a no-brainer. There were no negatives to this job. It’s fantastic on every level, and I feel really lucky to be a part of it.

What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome?

Definitely imposter syndrome. Early on, I found myself working with people I’d idolised—Alison Steadman, Imelda Staunton, Catherine Tate, and now Sigourney Weaver. You’re constantly thinking, “Do I deserve to be here?” Over time, I’ve learned to trust that I am here for a reason. It’s still surreal, though.

Finally, at FAULT, we ask everyone: What is your biggest fault?

My biggest FAULT? I’m a perfectionist, which isn’t always helpful. It’s great for the work, but it can mean I’m too hard on myself. I’m learning to let that go and trust the process more.
