Zoe’s Shanghai Drops FAULTLess New Single “Scratching”
Paris-based band Zoe’s Shanghai is back with a hypnotic new single, “Scratching,” released through Naïve Records. The track is an intimate jazz piece that showcases the band’s signature blend of woozy guitar riffs and tender, psychedelic melodies.
“Scratching” is a perfect canvas for Zoé Renié Harris, the band’s guitarist and lead singer, to flaunt her vocals. With a Jamaican heritage, Zoé brings a unique depth to her music, describing “Scratching” as a “conscious step into the labyrinth of my romantic relationships.” The song portrays a complex interplay of vulnerability and guardedness, perfectly illustrated in its captivating music video.
Zoé explains, “This song is a result of the conversations and collisions I’ve had on the road towards trust and understanding with my partner. Scared of what I can’t control, I find myself repeating patterns of behaviour. It is like coming back to a door but struggling to open and step through it.” The music flows seamlessly between delicate intimacy and sweeping dreamlike waves, echoing the rhythms of persistence, choice, and strength in her relationship.
Zoé’s musical journey is deeply rooted in exploring vintage vinyl collections. This background naturally led her to use music as an expressive outlet, reflecting her evolving environment through creation and performance.
Zoe’s Shanghai, consisting of Zoé, Mehdi (bassist), Emerik (pianist), and Landy (drummer), made a significant impact with their debut album Lava Love in 2021. The lead track, “Mother,” gained attention from the late fashion icon Virgil Abloh, who featured it in Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2021 Capsule collection. This pivotal moment launched the band into the spotlight as one of the most exciting new voices in contemporary music.
With their highly anticipated EP Undergrowth set to drop this year, 2024 is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for Zoe’s Shanghai. Don’t miss out on “Scratching” and keep an eye out for more from this rising Paris outfit.
