EZI
Emerging once again from the realm of moody melodies and deeply dark emotional lyrics, New Yorker LGBTQ+ recording artist EZI has been building a loyal fan base with her steady stream of releases. She began her creative career as an actress when she starred in the short-lived Nickelodeon show ‘The Other Kingdom’. Life took her in many different directions before she finally decided to pursue her true passion: music.
EZI’s debut EP Afraid Of The Dark was a turning point in her career. It garnered over 25 million streams with virtually no editorial support, putting her on everyone’s radar. Now, she has released a powerful collection of songs that exemplifies her commitment to quality over quantity.
The EP, titled Into Your Power, is part of the upcoming album Into Your Power, Into The Light. It is best described as the A-side of a cassette tape, offering a sneak peek into the depth and diversity of EZI’s artistry. The songs are moody and dark, drawing inspiration from artists such as Portishead, Lana Del Rey, Radiohead, The Weeknd, and Dido, as well as movies like Birdman and Kill Bill.
‘She’s Back’ is the opening and featured song. EZI showcases her vocal talent on this tune, with a range that rivals Lana Del Rey, telling a melancholic story of sorrow. ‘Play God’ is next, and it sits more between the realms of garage rock and pop. The lyrics are a bit more playful and a lot more seductive, with EZI infusing them with raw emotion. ‘Cold Cement’ continues our journey with a slower, more atmospheric track that highlights EZI’s beautiful vocals.
The EP wraps up with ‘Stop,’ a classic pop track packed with catchy hooks and melodies, perfectly concluding the listening journey. EZI’s songwriting and vocal skills shine throughout these tracks, making this EP a must-have for any music fan seeking an unforgettable experience.
“I dropped these songs after a period of dormancy as an artist, so in a lot of ways they represent me stepping back into my power as a creative. Visually, I told a story of a girl coming back to present day, looking bloody and beaten, and setting a car on fire in ‘She’s Back.’ Kind of like the plot-line in Kill Bill, the rest of the videos for ‘Play God,’ ‘Cold Cement,’ and ‘Stop’ were released as the flashbacks that led up to the initial moment in ‘She’s Back.’
Throughout these videos, I’m being stalked by an unknown shadow, only to find out at the end of Stop that the unknown figure was just the other version of me in ‘She’s Back.’ I think so much of stepping into your own is about letting go of the parts of yourself that are holding you back, which is what the visuals are about.
I love these songs so much and feel they really showcase who I am sonically at my core as an artist.”
