Maya J’an is a JUNO Award-winning songwriter recognized for co-writing Aqyila’s ‘Bloom’, which won Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year. She has also written for Pharrell, SAINt JHN, and Justine Skye. Her own artist project, however, is where the real story begins, and the newest chapter is titled ‘new june’.
The new single reaches for a second chance, imagining a different ending to something already closed. It evokes a morning where the phone rings and everything has changed. The song emerged from a difficult year, one she says she survived by holding on to hope, the idea that she could somehow leap into a version of life where things were already better. Haven’t we all ever felt like that at least once?
Co-written and produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer Rissi, the track is built on delicate piano and soft guitar chords, shaped by an unorthodox atmosphere. Maya’s voice remains restrained and intimate, conveying vulnerability and a quiet but persistent longing. Here, she stretches her indie-folk sound into oneiric, almost experimental territory, creating a texture that feels distinctly her own; if it needed a label, something like “hyperfolk” might come close.
Lyrically, “new june” reflects on how vital hope can be as a lifeline. It suggests that if daydreaming helps you endure difficult moments, then leaning into it might carry you through, far enough to feel, even briefly, like you’ve made it to the other side.
The single serves as a preview of her upcoming debut EP blindfaith county, arriving in May via Soulpower Records / Warner Records. It follows singles ‘cul-de-sac’, which has surpassed 1.7 million streams, and ‘pocket knife’. The full tracklist includes ‘nasty habit’, ‘art of not caring’, and ‘depends’. Sound-wise, ‘new june’ is memorable and emotionally resonant, balancing tenderness with a quietly persistent sense of hope. It’s a compelling listen.
