Looking for a song to set your week in motion? Or something that captures both intensity and passion? Well, look no further. American Authors‘ ‘Race Car’ is exactly what you need right now.
The track begins with warm guitar riffs and hypnotic rhythms over layered harmonies that draw you in instantly. Soon, the vocals take the lead, merging seamlessly with the melody to create a dynamic experience. The chorus stands out: it’s a thunderclap that hits fast and hard, leaving you breathless before you even realize it.
‘Race Car’ captures the fleeting nature of whirlwind romances, where emotions ignite with the speed and intensity of a racing car. As lead vocalist Zac Barnett explains, it’s about falling for someone fast, even though you know it’s only going to last a season, like the intense passion of a trip or vacation, where reality feels suspended. Even with the awareness that such passion is temporary, the song celebrates the thrill of living in the moment and cherishing memories, even as everyday life eventually brings the romance to an end.
Since their 2014 debut, Oh, What a Life, American Authors have come a long way. The New York-based pop-rock band has achieved milestones most groups only dream of: over 1 billion global streams, chart-topping songs, and multi-platinum singles.
Their triple-platinum hit, ‘Best Day of My Life’, climbed to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been featured in more than 600 movie trailers, TV shows, commercials, and even as the theme for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They’ve also shared stages worldwide, touring with Andy Grammer, O.A.R., OneRepublic, The Revivalists, and The Fray. Yet, as frontman Zac Barnett insists, the journey is far from over. “We just want to keep going,” he shares. “We can’t wait to continue this adventure.”
The band’s story goes back to 2006, when Barnett, bassist Dave Rublin, and drummer Matt Sanchez first crossed paths at Berklee College of Music in Boston. After realizing their chemistry, they dropped out and moved to Brooklyn, where their sound truly took shape. There, they connected with producer Shep Goodman, signed with his company Dirty Canvas, and later with Island Records. Early tracks like ‘Believer’ gained rotation on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation, paving the way for their breakthrough hit ‘Best Day of My Life’.
As they continue to push their sound forward, ‘Race Car’ is proof that American Authors still know how to hit the gas and take listeners on a ride worth remembering.
