SAS: Rogue Heroes has a reputation for intense action and compelling characters. What can you tell us about your role as John Tonkin in Season 2?
Well, he’s one of the newbies in a formidably tough group of lads, so in a way, he spends a lot of the season earning his place. He’s a trooper throughout, though—always chipper, and I love him for that.
How did you prepare to play a real-life figure like John Tonkin? Did you feel any pressure to honor his legacy?
Of course. Those are huge boots to fill! But it’s a good kind of pressure, I guess. God knows it’s nothing compared to what these guys dealt with. I actually got to talk to the lovely Jane Storey (John’s daughter) early in the process, which was fascinating. That insight really helped me get to know him a bit better. But at the end of the day, it’s all there on the page—especially with Stephen at the helm. You’ve just got to follow the writing.
Heartstopper brought you a huge amount of recognition for your portrayal of David Nelson. When moving on from roles, do you find it easy to jump into the next project, or do past projects linger in your mind?
They don’t linger, per se. It’s always sad to finish a project and let go of a character, but I feel like I learn something from each one, so they stay with me in some way—whether I like it or not. With David, though, I think I’m okay letting go of him.
