You’ve played such a diverse range of characters throughout your career. How do you approach stepping into the shoes of someone like Gregory Cromwell in Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light?

Charlie Rowe: We were really fortunate with Wolf Hall, as we not only had history to draw from but also the wealth of Hilary Mantel’s incredible writing. Her work is rich with detail, offering what might be the closest version we have to the truth of what happened then. Naturally, I began there.

When building a character, you piece together a picture from every available source—you read what you can, research, and follow every lead to see where it takes you. I even ended up driving to Launde Abbey to soak up Gregory’s home and visit his place of death. Thanks to everyone at Launde Abbey for the impromptu tour—it was a moment of connection to Gregory’s world that I’ll never forget.

The series explores themes of legacy, ambition, and survival in a ruthless political landscape. How do you think Gregory navigates these pressures, and how did you bring those nuances to life on screen?

I think Gregory has learned, much like his father, the power of observation—a remarkable skill to have, especially in such a reactive and volatile time. He’s also inherited his father’s empathy, particularly towards women, which allows him to be sensitive and wise—qualities that stand him in good stead. That balance of traits gives him a unique depth.

I have to admit, though, I’m not entirely sure how I managed to bring those nuances to the screen. It’s one of those things that just seemed to click in the moment. Looking back, I’m grateful for how it all came together.

What most surprised you about the project?

The sheer quiet on set was remarkable—I think Damien (Lewis) even described it as “monastic.” Given the size of the cast, I had expected chaos. But somehow, Peter, Mark, and the wonderful crew managed to create a haven of calm amidst it all. It was truly a dream.

What is your FAULT?

Too many to count, although a lot of my FAULTs are my strengths. But I do have the terrible habit of cursing cyclists when I drive and cursing drivers when I cycle.
