Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review: A Comprehensive Review of Unforgettable Performances

Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review : A Comprehensive Review of Unforgettable Performances

Lets face it – Glastonbury Festival 2024 was never not going to be great. My first Glasto ever, I was struck by the sheer scale and diversity of attractions that the festival had to offer. Comfortable walking shoes were essential for covering the ground from the Pyramid Stage to the south east corner but I was determined to make it happen.

The festival commenced with a mix of new and familiar elements. The much-anticipated drone show was a new addition, but tbh pailed in comparison to the traditional fireworks display we’d watched on TV for years.

Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review : Diverse Musical Acts

The festival’s genre diversity was on full display. The Glade hosted the Bristol beat crew The Nextmen and MJ Cole, whose sets were energetic and kept the crowd dancing. The Lonely Hearts Club saw Skream & Benga deliver a crowd-pleasing performance that was a hit among electronic music fans. South London pub-rockers Squeeze brought their classic sound to the festival, while K-Pop group Seventeen made history as the first in their genre to play the Pyramid Stage, showcasing the festival’s wide-ranging musical offerings.

Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review : Headlining Moments

Dua Lipa’s headlining performance on the Pyramid Stage was a definitive highlight. As the sun set, her rendition of “Levitating” transformed the crowd into a euphoric dance party. Dua’s journey from her early days, highlighted in her 2017 FAULT Magazine feature, to her commanding presence at Glastonbury, was a testament to her talent and hard work. Her duet with Kevin Parker was a standout moment that showcased her versatility.

Janelle Monáe’s Sunday slot on the Pyramid Stage was pure magic. Her energy was infectious as she performed hits like “Pink” and “Tightrope,” turning the field into a vibrant celebration. Her vocals surpassed her recordings, and her stage presence was both captivating and dynamic. Despite a scheduling clash with another major act, those who chose Janelle were rewarded with one of the festival’s best performances.

Anne-Marie’s set on the Other Stage was another standout. Beginning her performance atop several mattresses was a visually engaging touch, and her powerful voice carried far beyond the stage. The surprise appearance by Aitch during “Psycho” sent the audience into a frenzy, highlighting her ability to create memorable moments.

Nostalgic and New Sounds

Avril Lavigne’s debut at Glastonbury was a nostalgic trip for many. Her set on the Other Stage drew a massive crowd, eager to relive the early 2000s. Avril’s performances of “Sk8ter Boi” and “I’m With You” were flawless, her vocals strong and evocative. The blend of nostalgia and fresh energy captivated the audience, making her set a standout of the festival.

Paloma Faith brought her unique charm to the Pyramid Stage, performing hits like “Only Love Can Hurt Like This” and “Upside Down.” Her tribute to Amy Winehouse with a cover of “Back To Black” was a touching moment that resonated deeply with the audience. Paloma also took the opportunity to address internet trolls and offer some cheeky dating advice, adding a personal touch to her performance.

Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review : Under the Radar and Crowd Favourites

Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review

The Sugababes proved their enduring appeal with a stunning performance on the West Holts Stage. Their set included crowd-pleasers like “Push the Button” and “Round Round,” and their recent cover of “Flowers” was a hit. Their ability to draw such a large crowd suggests it’s only a matter of time before they headline the Pyramid Stage and the faster the better because it was dangerously busy in there.

Fatboy Slim’s performance at the Arcadia Stage was a masterclass in DJing. He took the crowd on a journey through musical history, blending ’80s rap samples with ’90s club classics. Performing from Arcadia’s iconic dragonfly installation, he kept the crowd dancing late into the night with his legendary skills.

Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review : Rap and R&B Highlights

Little Simz delivered an amazing set, at times emotional she remarked on how it was the biggest crowd she’s ever performed for but she 100% deserved it after that display. Tems captivated the crowd with her effortless control and smooth vocals. SZA did fall short of my expectations, having just seen her perform at Primavera Sound Festival 2024, we expected her to bring out the big guns but were sadly disappointed.

Glastonbury Festival 2024 Review : Crowd Management Challenges

Despite the overall success, the festival did face some crowd management issues. Notably, Sugababes’ performance at West Holts experienced significant crowd-flow problems, causing safety concerns and delays. These issues highlighted the need for improved crowd management in future editions or just better organisation of the late night stages but all in all, it was a small hiccup in an otherwise perfect weekend.
