Premiere: Rubberband Girl Drops Her Second Single ‘Star In A Reasonably Priced Car’
Riding the wave of critical acclaim from her debut single ‘South Suburban Weekend,’ Rubberband Girl, the innovative project fronted by the multifaceted Caitlyn Scarlett, is back with a fresh release. Her new track, ‘Star In A Reasonably Priced Car,’ premieres on FAULT today, showcasing a daring blend of genres and a sharp lyrical edge.
Renowned for her ability to blend soul, pop, trip hop, jazz, and R&B with effortless flair, Rubberband Girl’s latest offering solidifies her reputation as a dynamic and unpredictable artist.
While ‘South Suburban Weekend’ was a vibrant concoction of indie-pop, acid jazz, and trip-hop, ‘Star In A Reasonably Priced Car’ takes listeners on a different journey. The track, which melds modern bedroom pop with a ‘90s radio vibe and a quirky country twist, is a testament to Caitlyn’s versatility and creative prowess.
Caitlyn explains. “It’s about becoming a vehicle for other people’s dreams and ideas, facing constant critique, and the pressure of fitting in. Despite being the creative backbone of the music industry, songwriters are often undervalued and distanced from their musical identities. The title nods to a segment on the now-cancelled show Top Gear, which I dreamt of appearing on as a child.”
The single’s video, directed by Jack Wiles, mirrors the song’s lyrical narrative. Caitlyn stars as a taxi driver, chauffeuring a diverse array of passengers—from hen night revelers to sports enthusiasts, eccentric middle-class characters, a banjo player, and an overly enthusiastic bedroom producer. Despite the ever-changing passengers, Caitlyn remains at the wheel, driving in circles—a metaphor for the cyclical nature of her experiences in the industry.
We’re excited to see what comes next for Rubberband Girl as she continues to flex her musical might.
