Emmy Meli In Conversation With FAULT Magazine
Emmy Meli X FAULT Magazine
We’re diving into the vibrant world of blossoming music artist Emmy Meli, who’s making waves yet again with her latest track, “Breakthrough.” Following the runaway success of her self-love anthem “I AM WOMAN,” Emmy Meli returned with Breakthrough and it’s soon becoming a fan favourite for it’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics and is absolutely oozing with the creative penmanship we’ve come to expect from Emmy. We caught up with Emmy to discuss her musical journey, new music and of course, her FAULTs.
FAULT Magazine: What inspired your new song “Breakthrough”?
Emmy Meli: A Virgo, of course, but I also inspired myself by making light of bad situations from the past.
FAULT Magazine: The video for “Breakthrough” incorporates humour and your experience working on a golf course. How did you come up with the concept for the video, and what message did you want to convey?
Emmy Meli: It was an homage to the girl I was when I wrote “I Am Woman”, just a normal hardworking person with a bigger dream, working on a golf course. It was also an homage to the men on that course who made fun of my career choice or demeaned me and told me it was slim to none chances I’d make it. I bet they’re still playing golf on that course.
FAULT Magazine: Your breakout single “I AM WOMAN” became a viral sensation – do you feel pressure that every release has to top its success?
Emmy Meli: I actually don’t feel pressure in that way because I’ve learned that highs don’t last forever and neither do lows. This field is an ebb and flow, and I don’t do it for numbers or clout. I do it because I love it; so I truly believe if my driving force is love, everything else will follow suit.
FAULT Magazine: While pursuing music in college, you ultimately decided to drop out and focus on writing and recording your own songs. Was it daunting to make that leap of faith?
Emmy Meli: Truthfully, it wasn’t daunting because I am a woman who trusts my gut wholeheartedly. I also always knew college wasn’t for me and wasn’t going to get me where I actually wanted. Not because I’m not intelligent, but because my goals were that of a different path.
FAULT Magazine: You’ve achieved a lot in a short time, do you feel like you take all your experiences in or does it sometimes pass in a blur?
Emmy Meli: I definitely feel most of it has been a blur and very surreal, but lately, I am getting better at small moments– Taking a second to stand in my accomplishment, and take it in to the fullest extent. I had one of those moments on tour while the crowd was singing along to my song. 0.01% of people in this world get to experience that feeling. I do it all for them. I try to make sure I absorb those moments.
FAULT Magazine: You mentioned becoming a person your younger self would admire. What advice would you give to aspiring young artists who are pursuing their musical dreams?
Emmy Meli: I would tell young artists to never ever stop. There is a light inside of you that no one else has, and if you are hitting challenges it is only to help you grow. Never let anyone stand in your way, and never stop practicing and working hard. Contrary to popular belief, there is no secret to success but passion, hard work, and determination. Put in your 10,000 hours of mastery and be unstoppable.
FAULT Magazine: What are you most excited about for this “next era” in your music career?
Emmy Meli: I am most excited to finally tell my story and put out the art that is a reflection of my soul, and am excited for it to finally reach the entirety of the collective.
FAULT Magazine: What is your FAULT?
Emmy Meli: My fault is being too hard on myself. I have room for improvement when it comes to giving myself space and grace, as I tend to overextend and beat myself up when I’m not perfect.
