Rick Owens defied convention (as usual) with his Fall/Winter 2024 collection showcased at OwensCorp, his home and working compound in Paris. This unique venue, where Owens commenced selling collections 25 years ago, served as the backdrop for a show that echoed both restraint and rebellion in the face of contemporary challenges.
In the spirit of community, Owens extended invitations to some of his favorite creatives, creating a space for defiant aesthetics and technical innovation. Inflated rubber pull-on stretch boots, a collaboration with London designer Straytuka, Jackets and trousers made from recycled discarded bicycle tires, crafted by Matisse Di Maggio from the Parisian BDSM community, showed that community and collaboration were at the heart of this collection.
The collection’s proportions were intentionally outlandish, however, within the dystopian narrative, so very fitting. The denim offerings, treated in layers of wax and foil caught our eye not only for the design but also how Owens prioritised sustainability to reduce water waste througout production.
Owens’ decision to unveil his collection at OwensCorp, his Parisian dwelling, adds an intimate dimension to the show. The concrete palace with bare floors and offbeat furniture created by the designer himself provided a striking backdrop to the unconventional presentation. This departure from the usual grand venues at Paris Fashion Week lent a personal touch to the showcase, offering a glimpse into the designer’s private space.
The Fall/Winter 2024 collection, titled PORTERVILLE, not only showcased Owens’ signature wildness but also delved into his roots, paying homage to his hometown. The collection’s exploration of growth and enlargement, exemplified by form manipulation and innovative designs, mirrored the evolution of Porterville, a small town in Southern California caught between nature and industry.
With this collection Rick Owens reaffirms his vision, showcasing the grotesque in a way that is truly FAULTLess. The “Porterville” is a collection made possible by collaboration, community with environmental consciousness at the forefront – how could we not stan?
