Emeli Sande FAULT Magazine Cover and Interview
Sitting down with the one and only Emeli Sande we wanted to chat all about her new album ‘How Were We To Know’ and the musical journey it took to get here. With the recent release of the soulful single “All This Love,” and much more to come, we dive deep into Emeli’s process, her journey and of course, her FAULTs.
“All This Love” is the latest single from your upcoming album ‘How Were We To Know.’ Can you share the inspiration behind the track?
All this love is about the surplus abundance of emotions you have left over when a relationship ends, what to do with this energy? How to prevent it from becoming a destructive force in your life. It’s about the state of surprise and loss we find ourselves in when things fall apart. I wanted to track production to reflect the surge of emotions and inevitability of the wave of love exploding out of you regardless of how hard you try to suppress it.
How did you come to the decision for “There For You,” to be the lead single, and why did you feel it was important to lead with such an uplifting track?
I love the energy of the track and I thought it gave a positive, energetic opening to the album campaign. The lyric explores the persistence and endurance of love despite the pain in can cause.
“How Were We To Know” is out now. What can fans expect from the album in terms of musical style and themes?
How were we to know is an album packed full of emotion. It’s a story exploring the different forms and challenges of love. I really hope the listeners gain hope and strength from it. Along with an exploration of romantic love I wanted to also speak of self love and in particular I hope that the songs “true colours” and “nothing we can’t handle” encourage feelings of self confidence and self love.
When you look back on your musical journey, what’s been the most challenging hurdle you’ve had to overcome?
My lack of confidence. Over the past 10 years in the industry I have definitely grown in confidence and self belief. I feel so much more comfortable within myself and have much more clarity in how I wish to express myself.
As you evolve as an artist, do you ever feel trapped in competition with your previous releases?
Not really, I see each album as beginning again. It’s another story, another chapter. The main pressure I put on myself is making sure I am moving forward and improving as a musician and that my fans enjoy the music and feel connected to it.
What’s an aspect of your artistry that you wish people discussed more?
I see myself firstly as a lyricist where as I think I’m viewed more as a singe first. I’d love to speak more on the lyrics but on the other hand some times it feels pointless discussing lyrics or trying to explain music choices. Hopefully the music will do the speaking!
What’s an experience you haven’t recorded a song about is an area of your character you would love to explore more on the page?
I love to make a more abstract album which could allow more of a stream of consciousness in the lyric. It may not make much sense or have an expected structure but I’d love to see how people would connect with it
What are you most looking forward to this winter?
I’m travelling to Germany and Switzerland this winter I’m looking forward to performing and talking more about the album there
