The city cement turns into sand as I enter the runway area for Gypsy Sport’s SS24 collection.
The rain slows down the show time but the energy returns in full effect as the golden hour strikes. I witness some sartorial, sustainable splendor & interview some style born people!
The highlights were sexy sequins, knitwear, colorful leather, & thee iconic Dominique Jackson. The sequins dress worn by actress Annie Gonzalez is reminiscent of the can top dress from Gypsy Sport’s FW18 collection. The backstage area was filled with models posing in front of a grand white home framed by two columns & a canon out front. The looks give streetwear conscious with a twist of high low Americana. The gorgeous models slay every look representing an array of nationalities, genders, and sizes.
On account of, the brand owner, Rio Uribe’s design process being sustainability focused, I felt inclined to ask questions related to sustainability.
Interview moments:
CC: What’s your getting dressed process?
Elijah Crawford: The first thing I look at is the palette, tones. That’s my main thing…the palette and then the comfortability. If I’m not comfortable and it looks good…
CC & EC: It’s not worth it!
EC: Usually you don’t feel your best if you’re not comfortable so you’re not going to rock it the right way.
CC: Right! Your confidence is not going to be where it should be to serve at the level you deserve to serve
CC: What’s your favorite piece in your wardrobe rotation right now?
EC: I have a staggering amount of babushkas! It’s my favorite accessory. Other than that the brand that I love in Philly, that’s second hand, is called Casa Vida Style. Everything I’m wearing today is from them.
CC: How do you get dressed in the morning? What do you think about before using your body as a sartorial canvas?
Moonbear: Lately, it’s like do I want to dress CUNT or not? That’s where it starts.
CC: What’s your favorite piece you’ve been wearing lately?
Moonbear: These boots, I got them from Raveland in Los Angeles.
CC: What do you feel about sustainability in the fashion industry right now?
Out of Office: It’s 100% needed right now. We’re at a time where we have to be more conscious of what we’re wearing and how it’s affecting where we’re living. I feel like we’re at the point where we have to be more transversal with our clothing season round.
CC: Who’s killing it in the sustainability game right now?
OOO: Edvin Thompson of Theophilio.
CC: How do you feel about representation in the Latinxs community, specifically in fashion?
Annie Gonzalez: Here’s how I feel! Being here today, at Gypsy Sport’s 10th anniversary, to walk as a Chicana from East LA, 5 feet tall, curvy AF…I would’ve never dreamed that something like this was possible. The brand, the style, the vibe is inclusive in a way that makes you feel like you don’t even have to say the word “inclusive”. It’s just known.
CC: What’s your favorite piece in your closet right now?
AG: I just got this skirt…(the store’s) called Melrose (Vintage) in Whittier (California) in a Burberry kind of pattern.
