Get ready to immerse yourself in the vibrant and electrifying atmosphere of the Anguilla Summer Festival 2023! This annual celebration, also known as Carnival, takes place on the picturesque Caribbean island of Anguilla from 23rd July to 13th August, bringing together locals and visitors for an unforgettable experience.
The Anguilla Summer Festival is an explosion of colour, music, dance, and cultural festivities. It pays tribute to the island’s rich heritage and showcases its indigenous roots through a variety of events. From street parades to soca and calypso music shows, lively beach parties to thrilling boat races, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
The festival’s origins can be traced back to traditional August Monday fairs and bazaars, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Africans in British colonies. Since its formal inception in 1940, the festival has evolved to become a fusion of boat racing, carnival traditions, and exuberant celebrations.
The festival officially kicks off with pageants and competitions, celebrating local talent and beauty. Witness the Miss Anguilla Swimsuit Competition, Talented Teen Competition, and Prince & Princess Competition, all of which set the stage for the exciting days ahead.
One of the festival highlights is the spectacular “Light The Street Parade” on 3rd August. This electrifying event features brightly lit floats, participants adorned with glowing jewellery and neon torches, and lively music, creating a mesmerising night spectacle.
As the festival progresses, the South Valley Community Street Festival takes centre stage, keeping the community spirit alive with live music, DJ sets, local arts and crafts, and delectable cultural food and drinks.
On 7th August, the island comes alive with a street jam and beach party known as “J’ouvert” and the “Caribbean Beach Party and Boat Race.” These events last a full 24 hours, attracting thousands of revellers to the shores of Sandy Ground beach.
For night owls, “Eyes Wide Shut” is the ultimate day-break fete. Dance until the sun rises to the beats of world-renowned soca music stars like Nadia Batson, Patrice Roberts, and Ricardo Drue.
The festival culminates on 13th August with the highly anticipated “Champ of Champs Boat Race.” The winner from each boat race during the carnival week competes in this thrilling finale, crowning the official Champion of Champions.
