Basil Panagop releases new single ‘Morning Voodoo’ ft. Fauves

Basil Panagop, the Canadian lo-fi rapper and designer drawing parallels with the likes of Frank Ocean, Brent Faiyez and Brockhampton, releases his storytelling new single ‘Morning Voodoo’ ft. Fauves on 23rd June.

The track opens with Panagop’s mother talking about how he kept everything to himself as a child, and how she was able to help process his feelings by ‘talking to him’. That’s the core theme of the piece, which emphasises the importance of vocalising one’s feelings and letting people in. The music is almost soothing, as if to say, “Okay, you made it! Now you can relax and enjoy yourself.” When Panagop talks about why people shut down or use walls as a coping strategy, it’s clear it’s coming from a place of empathy rather than judgement. Then the chorus begins to reassure the listener that everything is going to be alright: whatever the problems you’ve experienced, all you need to do is learn how to let people in.

Panagop’s latest single is another lo-fi piece from his upcoming second album 6AM, due out later this year. In his short career thus far, Panagop has released an album in recent years and two singles this year, including ‘Plantain’ and ‘6AM’. In the process, he’s building a loyal fan base, generating more than 2.1 million streams. He also played at several international festivals and showcases across Europe, including Endless Summer, The Great Western, Future Echoes and New Skool Rules.

Writing and producing melodic lo-fi rap with poetic lyrics, Basil Panagop, aka Vasili Demitri Panagopoulos, has been widely acclaimed for his unique blend of styles, from alternative R&B and hip-hop to pop with honest and personal lyrics.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Greek parents, and currently living in Berlin, Panagop always seems to be on the move. Fresh from an economics degree from Halifax’s Saint Mary’s University, Panagop moved to London to immerse himself in the city’s music scene, where he drew inspiration for his debut solo project, La La Land. Panagop’s creativity and passion for self-expression led him to Glasgow, where he continued to develop his craft and build his collective with the help of friends and long-time collaborators Julian Schmidt, Kasper Vidunas, Eric Liddle of Humble Productions, as well as Glasgow-based band Fauves (who feature on this track), amongst others.
