There was an air of excitement from the guests of the Double Take, An SMA My Way initiative fashion show because it is the first runway of its kind. The purpose aims to increase authentic disability representation and place a spotlight on the need for adaptive design in fashion.
Guests were given a booklet including words to remember about inclusive language; “Adaptive fashion – stylish clothing specifically designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities, such as adding hidden magnets behind buttons for easier dressing”. Emphasizing that it isn’t about saying the “right” things but rather about respecting diverse life experiences and being willing to learn from different perspectives.

At the end of the show, model and actress Sawson Zakaria expresses: “In Hollywood we’re really starting to see a shift where people with disabilities are finally starting to be acknowledged and their talents are being recognized. There’s still a lot of work to do but it’s a start…and what’s great about that is that the more people with disabilities have the opportunity to work and be a part of the conversation, the more non disabled people can see how inaccessible this world actually is…” She wore a predominantly blue, printed halter catsuit styled with a custom chainmail belt.
Accessible design and adaptations by Open Style lab fellows; Andrea Saieh, Kyle Brogan, Catherine Burkey, Jenna Dewar, Kiley Gallant, Rosemary Loh and Kiley Gallant. Styled by Don Sumada. Alterations by Darlene DeAndrade. Dressed by Barbara Berman.
