Mae Muller is shaping up to be one of the most exciting new artists. Despite her previously released ‘Better Days’ being released over 9 months ago, it still managed to see play all throughout this summer. Now Mae returns with a captivating new single ‘American Psycho’ Alongside Marshmello and Trippie Redd.
We caught up with Mae to discuss her artistic journey, her process and of course, her FAULTs.
Did you have to tap into your own personal experiences when writing for American Psycho?
Mae Muller: I think a lot of people have been in a toxic situation, whether it be a friendship or relationship or even a family member. I’ve certainly had my fair share so naturally those emotions came out. Its very therapeutic.
As a songwriter, do you ever find that writing from such deep emotions can leave you feeling emotionally drained, or is it more of an emotional relief once you’ve completed a track?
Mae Muller: I see it more as a relief. I feel so lucky that I get to have this output, honestly its a luxury! I’ve always found solace in writing, its sometimes a lot easier to put what you’re feeling in to a song rather than in to words. That sounds like a cliche but its true!

What would you say has been the most challenging song to write emotionally?
Mae Muller: I think one of the most emotional songs I’ve written is an unreleased one, it will be on my album. Its kind of like a stream of thought, about all my insecurities and me just being really honest about how vulnerable I can feel and also how thats okay. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

What was it like to working with Marshmello and Trippie Redd on this track?
Mae Muller: Its a dream! They’re both so talented and I’m a big fan of both of them. I think we were an unexpected trio but an iconic one!

What would you say has been the hardest hurdle you’ve had to overcome this year?
Mae Muller: Trying to be patient! I would love to just release music when I want where I want but its not as simple as that unfortunately. Its all worth it in the end but it can be hard to be sitting on such great songs you’re so proud of!
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in yourself creatively since your last release?
Mae Muller: I think I’m way more confident in my performance. I’ve had a lot of time to just perform and put everything in to that, so I think I’ve really grown in that way.

What’s been the best advice you’ve ever received?
Mae Muller: Try not to compare yourself, focus on your own journey. You are YOU for a reason, its what makes you special. Also, have your finances figured out and not rely on any man for money or happiness (thank you mum for that one x)

What’s been the worst?
Mae Muller: To have a plan b… I feel like for me this was the only thing I could ever imagine myself doing. So figuring out a plan b felt like I was planning to fail plan A. I know I have a lot of privilege being able to say that, but in my experience, I’m very thankful I didn’t put energy in to my plan b.
What are you working on next?
Mae Muller: ALBUM!!! The songs are actually basically all done its just finishing touches, and working out the creative/visual side which is so much fun!

What is your FAULT
Mae Muller: Comparing myself to others, still working on that part. We’ll get there though!
