When it comes to making music, Ava Maybee is certainly an artist who moves to the beat of her own drum. Her brand new single See Me Now is definitely further proof of that. We caught up with Ava to discuss her musical journey so far and of course, her FAULTs.

Tell us about the inspiration behind “See Me Now”.

Ava Maybee: See Me Now is a deeply personal song. I was inspired by a break-up that I had gone through, that I never thought I would get over – and when I did I felt strong and empowered. As I working out the song with my co-writer (Emile Ghantous) it felt like “See Me Now” could be how many people feel after dealing with anything that is hard, heartbreaking and emotionally complicated…you know coming out on the other side in a positive way.

Do you ever feel a disconnect between the music you create and the music others are expecting to hear from you?

Ava Maybee: I have been so lucky to always have been supported in my music journey. Whatever music I have been creating has come from my heart and soul and that is what I believe is the magic with all musicians. This is not exactly a disconnect – but one thing people are surprised about is that I have a really low voice!

How has lockdown and quarantine affected your songwriting?

Ava Maybee: In every way! I have had so much more time to be alone with my thoughts and everything going on in the world often felt so overwhelming that I started to write every day as a way to express all the emotions.

What’s something no one has ever asked you but is something you’ve always wanted to say/discuss?

Ava Maybee: Haha! No one has ever asked me what I would want to be if I wasn’t a musician..the answer is either a forensic scientist or psychologist.

What would you say has been the most challenging aspect of your musical journey so far?

Ava Maybee: I have been really motivated by the challenge to give enough time to both be in college classes and be in the studio making music.

When it comes to your songwriting, does inspiration to write come fluidly or do you prefer more regimented writing sessions?

Ava Maybee: I definitely prefer structure. So when I have a session booked I can prepare ideas for the session. But I also often write down random thoughts that later turn into songs. I also inspired when I am collaborating with other producers and writers – so in that sense I am also a go with the flow kinda person.

What’s something you’re currently doing to protect your mental health?

Ava Maybee: Knitting, Getting outside in the NYC snow, making jewelry and making time for friendships.

What is your FAULT?

Ava Maybee: Overly emotional!!!!
