What would you each say the other brings to the duo?
Young T: I think it is just different perspectives really. Like for example one day the other one might bring an idea to the table that the other one hadn’t thought about or they might like one thing and suggest it to the other so it creates a good balance for us both.
Bugsey: Yeah I agree, we both bring different ideas and perspectives, which helps us as a whole to progress.
How would you say being of Afro Caribbean descent influences your sound?
Bugsey: I would say it’s just because of the way we grew up. What we grew up listening to sort of trickles into our music and you hear both our backgrounds coming out.
Young T: Yeah, we try to embrace the sounds that we grew up listening to and throw it into our music because we’re both very proud of our heritage.
From my understanding, your time spent at a community centre was pivotal to the development of your sound?
Bugsey: Most definitely, it was very important. It was where we first started recording.
Young T: A lot of our early music and just our basic understanding of each other as artists started from there as well so it was really important.
Do you have any plans to be involved with any programmes like that in the future?
Bugsey: Yeah I think we’d love to. It’s definitely something we have spoken about, doing something in Nottingham for the community because as we’ve seen our self these things can be life-changing.
Young T: Even if it wasn’t us ourselves that was to do it and someone else was to start it up we’d definitely look to help fund it may be in the future.
Having the Stormzy co-sign so early in your career must have been great, but did it create pressure to live up to those expectations?
Bugsey: No, I wouldn’t say so you know.
Young T: He literally just acknowledged us and made it clear to the world that he was rocking with us, but we knew we still had to put in the work.
Bugsey: Yeah, and the rest was down to us.
Having had chart success do you think it’s easy to slip into the mindset of “This works, we’ll keep doing that” and how do you keep evolving?
Bugsey: Erm as an artist I don’t think so. Because me and T are very versatile and as an artist, we don’t want to rinse out a certain sound too much or make one sound the only thing that people know us for because we can make a variety of sounds.
Young T: Good music is good music and as artists, we always want to push ourselves in order to evolve.
What’s a genre that you haven’t tried that you’d like to experiment with?
Young T: To be honest we have tried a variety of different sounds already but we just haven’t released a lot of them.
Bugsey: We haven’t tried Soca or anything like that yet though! both laughing
Young T: To be honest though Soca wouldn’t be as hard to try as you would think. Maybe we might try something like that soon. But overall we are very versatile so we are able to try lots of different things and I think we make it sound good.
Name a song on your playlist we wouldn’t expect to be there?
Young T: I couldn’t give you a name off the top of my head but in my playlist, there is a lot of Jazz vibes on there. That’s what you’ll see if you have a little look on my playlist.
Bugsey: Ermm me, actually there is this song right now that I’m liking its by a group called Barrie. I think they are from New York and the song is called ‘Michigan’. Really underground and really Indie but I like that song.
What is your FAULT?
Young T: I’d probably say I would like to be more sociable you know. I would definitely like to socialise a bit more.
Bugsey: Me, I would probably like to cut down on smoking a little! Yeah definitely that I would say.
