FAULT Focus: Studio Dagda
What was your main inspiration behind Studio Dagda?
Well, definitely a feeling, common to the three of us, of a need to detach ourselves from everything that for us was the ideal of fashion as a doctrine. We wanted to create an independent colourful world, mature and effective, that could capture the attention of everyone, giving a signal.
Your designs appear to deliberately fly in the face of convention – they are quirky, original and inventive rather than derivative in any way. Was that a conscious decision or did it just occur naturally in the progression of your work?
We always try our best to keep our designs new and fresh and to work in an innovative way. Our work is just a translation of our inner vision and our aesthetic taste, so I guess we could say that it is something that came naturally with the progression of our work.
Can you tell us about some of the unique features of the label?
Dagda is characterized most assuredly by the use of wool, so to create structured volumes and to decorate every piece and by the complete absence of black. So far we have never used black for our designs. Black is a trap.
What are the main influences behind your collection – if any?
We are obviously influenced by everything around us, our lifestyle and our ethics, but at the same time we really want Dagda to remain an uncontaminated world with a strong voice and a powerful signature that influences its surroundings but remains unaffected by them.
Is there a particular process you follow when designing?
Definitely music is a huge part of our designing process. We play music all the time while working. It increases our motivation and raises our spirits.
How involved are you with the production of the line? Where are the materials sourced and where are the final designs manufactured?
We are very involved. We like to follow every single step to ensure the originality of the piece. We also like to think that our finished product will be unique and special, a promise that we made to ourselves from the beginning. It is so important to make the right choices when it comes to materials. Most of them are sourced in Italy, in Tuscany precisely, where the quality of fabrics and wools is unmatched and the final designs are manufactured in the UK, mainly from us.
Do you have a favourite piece from the collection?
Well, thinking about it, yes. Definitely our neoprene men’s kimono! It is one of our key pieces and has to be worn by urban warriors.
Who would be your dream client to design for/work with?
Impressive people.
What are you currently working on?
We’re in a moment of great changes right now. Without a doubt our main goal is to promote ourselves!
What are your plans to expand the line?
We have a few things planned. Showrooms and tradeshows are definitely our next step.
What is your FAULT?
Definitely having our heads too far up in the clouds!
