FAULT FAVOURITE – PHLO FINISTER – CROWN GOLD
Last month FAULT featured LA singer/songwriter Phlo Finister’s latest track Bang Bang. Phlo has recently released a new EP CROWN GOLD which you can check out at Phlolove or 3/4 (3qtr records). The 6 tracks are must listen. FAULT caught up with Phlo and found out about the artist’s music, inspirations and what fans can expect in 2012.
FAULT: Hi Phlo how are you?
Phlo: I’m great. How are you?
FAULT: We are doing good, thanks.
FAULT: Can you tell us about your musical background?
Phlo: Well I came up singing in the church ya know; my whole family is musical. So I guess it’s just kinda always been there, not like the focus, but always present.
FAULT: How would you describe your sound?
Phlo: Throwback Trap R&B conceived in 1964.
FAULT: What artists/musicians have inspired you the most?
Phlo: R.I.P. Heavy D.
FAULT: What’s your song writing process like?
Phlo: I like to take it slow. Slow is nice. You can’t force these things really, they just happen when then are ready to happen. So I get inspired and… Yeah.
FAULT: You’ve recently recorded a track with Peaches Geldof, how did that come about?
Phlo: I made her do it! We’re super close. She’s dope and she’s in a band and we wanted to make a girl-band song so we did one. I’ve always wanted to be in a girl band.
FAULT: You are based in LA, but have lived/spent time in NYC and London, how has that effected you as an artist?
Phlo: I feel like it has allowed me to be more free with my musical choices. Just being consumed in these different environments, I mean you cant travel and not be inspired by something. London is dope, I love London.
FAULT: How did you come up with the idea for your mash-up BANG BANG?
Phlo: I love so many types of music, from so many eras. My friends and I were talking about all this random music and how so much of what people think of as “different” is really just people’s’ preconceptions. Music is music. Art is art.
FAULT: Do you have any gigs coming up in the near future?
Phlo: I’m just in the recording process right now. Performance is a whole other art. Its coming though, yeah, soon…
FAULT: You have a background in fashion, can you tell us more about that?
Phlo: Oh, who told you that lolz?
FAULT: Phlo, FAULT will give you a few hints a) from one very fashionable guy b) he has a new album out too, c) please see photo below!;)
FAULT: How important to you are the visuals that correspond with your music?
Phlo: Crucial. It’s super personal for me. I make all of them with my friends.
FAULT: What are your plans for 2012?
Phlo: Youthquaker, Charkbate, 3qtr, and Pop Couture. London. Because I’m a part of Generation Y Not?
FAULT: Who would you like to work with and why?
Phlo: Shirley Manson. She is the truth.
FAULT: What is your FAULT?
Phlo: Well, I live in L.A. so I guess it’s the San Andreas fault.
