More than meets the lens in wonderland
Aged only 18, Alexandra Sophie is a talented self-taught shutterbug that has turned into a most promising professional photographer. Based in Paris, she has started to make a name for herself in Europe and North America. Today, Fault takes you on a journey to her magical world, a place where beauty and innocence meet in nature and simplicity.
A sweet invitation to reverie.
FAULT: Your first memory as a photographer?
AS: It was four years ago, I was sitting in my backyard with an old video camera when I got really bored and didn’t know what to do. I was looking at a far away tree and I suddenly wanted to hold it in my hands. It was my first picture with some ‘intention’ in it. As soon as the picture was taken, I created a deviantArt account. You can still find it at http://supermalade.deviantart.com/#/dw2a9n
Most importantly, this very picture is the one that put me in touch with the father of my soon-to-be-born child and turned out to be the start of a real career. Today, my clients are from all over the world, ranging from private individuals to brands and publishers. I owe photography a lot.
FAULT: What inspires you?
AS: I get inspiration from looking at people around me. What strikes me most is their tendency to forget what is essential: love and innocence. I feel like I am on a mission to restore these values in the hearts of everyone.
I also find inspiration in my wounds of the past. That is why I tend to escape into a dream like world of my own making.
FAULT: Is there a core message in your work?
AS: There is no special message to read in my pictures. I just want everyone to find their own story to tell.
FAULT: Do you think your camera has a life of its own?
AS: I do consider my camera as my buddy. It follows me through all of my experiences and helps me capture life through different eyes.
FAULT: Apart from Photography, what do you like to do?
AS: Well, I like eating carrot soups and playing with clouds which constantly move and change in the sky. I love shopping, especially in second-hand markets. I can buy stuff I find interesting for future photoshoots’ purposes. On sunny days, I get on a bike with my fiancé, we stop by the river and find inspiration together in nature.
FAULT: What do you like best in Paris?
AS: I think Paris is charming and I like the fact that I have the opportunity to discover new things and be surprised every single day.
FAULT: Men seem to be absent from your pictures. Where have they gone?
AS: Since I was a little girl, I have seen men as violent and heartless. Now, my fiancé proves me wrong everyday but I still remain more sensitive to the softness of women.
FAULT: A Genie from a bottle offers you one wish, what would it be?
AS: I don’t trust Genies. I like surprises and I’d rather feel that I am responsible for my own destiny.
FAULT: Do you have a specific goal or do you just go with the flow?
AS: I just go with the flow!
FAULT: What’s your FAULT?
AS: Is there any such thing as perfection? But if I had to name one fault, I’d say stubborness.
