FAULT: You describe your sound as /Alternative / Experimental / Pop How do you keep your sound so unique?

Many people ask me “What genre is your music?” I can’t answer that question. My sound seems to be too unique for some people. I’m always treasuring my character and identity. It’s not only about the music. For example, I have a thin body and long hair, I sometimes shave my eyebrows. I know that is strange. But it represents who I am.  I think I should have my own idea, my own lifestyle, as I am an artist…Perhaps it makes my sound unique.

FAULT: Who did you grow up listening to?

My grandmother is a teacher of Japanese traditional music, and my mother wanted to be a singer of classical music. My mother and her sister used to play piano, I grew up with the sound of Japanese instrument played by my grandmother. It was like a lullaby to me. I collaborated with my grandmother in my new album “Ki Re Tsu”. My grandmother played Japanese instrument, Shamisen. I think it’s a new style of Japanese pop music.

FAULT: What is your creative process when writing new material?

Music track, lyric, singing… then music video. I created some videos with my team, as I am a performer and director. But all processes are at once. I feel all creative processes have strong relationships. When all processes are matched, new sound is born.

FAULT: Do you write from personal experiences?

Yes, of course. But writing by only personal experiences, I think that is self-satisfaction. And it limits listener’s image. I mix personal things and fantasy, legend or social problem. By using metaphor or irony, my sound gets new possibilities and my art can not only be my personal experience.

FAULT: What can we expect from takashi in 2011?

FAULT: Are you inspired by your surroundings?

Yes, I am, especially, by noise. I don’t use portable audio, There are many interesting sounds around our lives. I can get some inspirations from that. I enjoy the sounds of life

FAULT: What do you think of modern day pop?

To be honest, I think modern day pop is not good very. Japan particularly. I know there are many good artists, and I feel some pop acts are interesting. But some people forget about tradition, and they just chase trend. I know we must treasure the trend, but we must treasure identity. Tradition has relation with culture. Pop is a mirror of our society. I think we must enjoy many types of cultures. And pop must be more various. Even now, some Japanese pop music just imitates Western pop music. Though Japan has traditional and unique culture. It’s a sad thing.
