The Sexual Outlaws
FAULT: Who are the sexual Outlaws?
The name of the band is taken from John Rechy’s 6th book–The Sexual Outlaw. The book is about the oppression of homosexuals in late 1970’s Los Angeles.
The band name The Sexual Outlaws is not limited to homosexuals per se—a sexual outlaw can be one who is celibate, bisexual, pansexual, eunuch, or even one who is simply promiscuous.
FAULT: What is your musical background?
I hold a bachelor’s degree in composition from Berklee College of Music. My writing partner is Jordan Richter whom I’ve simply dubbed “the gothic Mutt Lange”. We compose our songs whilst wearing white lab coats and we write chord progressions out on a chalkboard. Purple chalk of course. This is to ensure maximum shaking of tailfeathers on the indie dancefloor.
FAULT: What are you hoping to achieve in 2011?
We have just completed the writing of our debut album, titled REVENGE OF THE SPINSTERS. We hope to record soon.
tracklisting is as follows: god’s daughter/amateur night/do the torrence/night of the living bachelors/act II/adventures in dating/train to pyongyang/party in the gulag!/freelance gynecologist/a heart of hearts/a day without sex/welcoming committee/mussolini was a good kid/all i ask of u/the most beautiful woman in multnomah county
FAULT: Who inspired you as a child?
F. Scott Fitzgerald. My father gave me a copy of The Great Gatsby when I was 7. Although I did not understand it when I first read it I certainly do now. It is my favorite book and I read it at least once a year.
FAULT: What is it like being an band based in Portland Oregon?
It’s absolutely dreadful–don’t move here. It rains here all the time and we are all suicidal. My flatmates have removed all the sharp objects because they somehow believe that I will have a future in the world of music. If this doesn’t work out I have auditioned to be Sarah Palin’s food taster.
FAULT: What is the track “on your to do list” about?
It is a personal song to myself. When I first moved here I started up a relationship with someone whom I was involved with previously. I don’t believe she really had the time for me nor believed in anything other than herself. It was a mistake of which I am ashamed and embarrassed—so embarrassed that “i sneak into my own house”. Although it’s personal I feel it’s a universal feeling that anyone of all orientations can relate to.
FAULT: Do you write from personal experiences?
There is no other place to write from. It’s me–warts, boils and ghastly blemishes.
FAULT: What was your biggest highlight of 2011?
That i somehow manage to get out of bed.
FAULT: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?
Kayne West and Robert Smith—both at the same time, I think it would be interesting.
FAULT: Who is underrated?
Clinic. Manic Street Preachers. Fiona Apple.
FAULT: Who is overrated?
The Drums. I’m not sure what the staff at the NME were smoking when they hyped The Drums last year. If you could get me some I would certainly appreciate it.
FAULT: What is your FAULT?
I tend to develop long-term crushes but fail to do anything about them. I’ve still got one from last summer that looms over my head like a black cloud. I intend kick this nasty habit this year though, because I am no longer afraid—and I believe in it.
