MONICA MILLA
FAULT: How would you describe your work?
I think there always ends up being an element of fantasy and imagination in my work. Subconsciously, my themes often evolve around the beauty of contrast and the effect that develops when two distinctly diverse elements meet.
My aim is to be to be fresh and fluid in what ever I do and let my surroundings and subjects inspire and guide me.
FAULT: What/Who inspires you?
The light inspires me. I am always looking for it. The beautiful thing about light is that it is ever changing, alive and is the ultimate source of atmosphere, feeling and of the beauty which I attempt to capture.
Unguarded or candid moments. The moment that inspires me is when a subject is uninhibited and unconscious of the emotions that are conveyed through their facial expressions and body language.
Fairytales. Gothic Folklore. The modern world and modern culture and how elements from the past are reinvented and reassimilated into modern popular consciousness.
Certain passages from literary works can influence my mood, arouse my imagination and thought, and motivate me to begin creating something new
FAULT: Who do you love working with?
First and foremost my business partner (and sister) Stefanie Milla.
My great friend, model Estelle Moughton.
People that have enthusiasm, imagination, love to play, but have the energy and determination to commit to the work and contribute something that is exceptional and unique.
FAULT: What are you working on that the moment?
We are in the developmental stage of our designer label love&milla.
The concept behind this project is the integration of photographical art elements into clothing and eventually jewellery.
FAULT: What is your proudest moment?
I am always proud of myself for doing what I love!
FAULT: Who would like to photograph both past and present?
I’d like to shoot the whole world….and identical twins.
FAULT: What is the strangest thing that’s ever happened to you on a shoot?
Falling into an open grave…….
More often than not I fall over while I’m working. Anyone that takes photos knows contortion is part of the job description.
FAULT: Do you have a favourite photograph?
My favourite photographs are those taken under water. The light refracts so beautifully and so different from each angle. Subjects move differently. Clothes move differently, it can seem magical.
FAULT: Do you have any Heroes?
Photographers; Terry Richardson and Ellen Von Unwerth; I am inspired by their work and relate to it.
Sophia Coppola as a director; her film credits are few, but each film is both visually and viscerally rich.
FAULT: What is your FAULT?
Striving for perfection, when the truth is imperfection is more beautiful and fascinating.
