FAULT Weekly Playlist: RYDER

Rising LA based R&B pop artist RYDER feels like a kindred spirit, a girl who you just met but you know immediately that you need to be best friends. Writing deeply relatable lyrics and coming from NYU’s music program that has shone a light on talents such as Gallant and Maggie Rogers, it seems RYDER is primed for success.

Her thumping single “King” showcases her vocal range that has a smoke-y quality akin to Amy Winehouse, but with a heavier pop bent. It’s a celebratory song about how love can be this power another human has that reigns over you.

We asked RYDER to share some of her current favorite songs, including the absolute monster hit “Somebody Else” by The 1975. Stream on!

My Chemical Romance – Welcome to the Black Parade

One of my favorite songs of all time. The video and the song are just perfect! It has this epic & emotional beginning production and writing wise, it follow’s no structure and becomes an almost different song midway through, every second is just mind-blowing. It just keeps building and is so well thought out from start to finish. It feeds the emotional teenager in me.

Florence + the Machine – Shake It Out

When I read Florence Welch’s lyrics I feel as if I’m reading poetry, her use of language truly knows no bounds. Shake it out acknowledges darkness and regrets and yet is inspiring and uplifting, it has a little bit of everything. Her voice is just stunning; this record continues to be a constant inspiration and influence for me throughout my writing process. I saw Florence Welch perform live at Coachella a few years ago at the show where she famously broke her foot and it was by far one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen on a stage. She really brings everyone into the world she’s created.

The 1975 – Somebody Else

This song was my introduction to The 1975 and yes I know I was late to the party, but now I’m hooked! I remember a friend said to me “You have to listen to this band, you will be obsessed with their music” she played me “Somebody Else”, I ended up listening to it on repeat for the next few weeks and still put it on all the time. Everyone can relate to Truman Black’s narrative in some form and it puts me in this amazing nostalgic mental space. The concept and production is so simple and it doesn’t need anything else to be epic. That’s something I always try to remind myself that when simple feels good, it can be the best way to convey a song.

Greg Holden – Boys In The Street (Seeb Remix)

I don’t think I can even get through this song without crying, it’s pretty new I just recently discovered it but it has truly touched me. It’s a story about a man whose father wouldn’t accept him for simply being himself and being different until he is finally on his death bed and see’s that perhaps he really didn’t know best from the start and that in love there is no right or wrong. This song tells a real story with layers from start to finish in the way that old time records or country songs do. The remix Seeb did really compliments the melody; it’s an amazing collab.

MIA – Paper Planes



First off, the music production and the use of that guitar sample by Diplo is incredible, he is a definitely a dream collaborator of mine. M.I.A. is this fierce female who uses her commanding voice to tell stories about real world issues and isn’t afraid to get honest, she is another inspiration to me. I remember becoming obsessed with this record back in high school and I think its one of those songs that always stays relevant no matter how much time passes.

Amy Winehouse – Valerie



I mean where do I even start, Amy winehouse was such a legend it breaks my heart that she is no longer with us. Her music touched people. Her honesty and pain laced with a whole lot of sauce came through her lyrics and is what made her so unique. Also for the time the production and jazz infused soul was a genre she reignited in the popular music space. Amy tells her story combined with a voice that just has so much power and depth. I love all her music it’s quite hard to pick, so I chose my two favorites. Mark Ronson who produced these records to me is just mindblowingly talented, I’ve been lucky enough to meet him in passing a few times. He is another dream collaborator of mine. I always put on Amy’s music when I’m at home relaxing or just having me time, I truly enjoy all of rich texture and lush instrumentation.

Santigold – Chasing Shadows



I’m a big Santigold fan she’s such a creative soul, her wild melodies and bold left-winged production are pure ear candy. The low vocal tone she has in the verse is so rich and her highs have so much character. I love listening to her, her music feels like real art.

Fun. – We Are Young

I’m such a sucker for epic melodies and acoustic leaning production, Fun. and Jeff Bhasker are brilliant on this tune.

Robyn – Dancing On My Own



First off, the whole “body talk” album is unreal I’ve probably listened to every song a million times easily, voice, lyric, production, melodies it’s all just so on point and delicious! You can’t hear that intro and not want to dance, such an empowering tune, a true girl anthem!

Purity Ring – Fineshrine



One of my favorite productions on a song ever! The intro in this too is brilliant.

Son Lux – Flickers

Ryan Lott of Son Lux is one of my absolute favorite artists, his voice is hauntingly beautiful and his music is stunning. He started as a film composer and so you have this dreamy fantasy production with operatic sounds. He also uses instruments like oboes and uncommon sounds to create these amazing musical cascades.

The Brit Awards 2017 – FAULTless Bits

 

 

This year’s Brit Awards were in no shortage of talent. From Skepta‘s unreal performance to The 1975 winning Best British Group and Katy Perry making a political statement with her performance, the upcoming year in music seems brighter than it ever has.

Wham! made a touching tribute to George Michael and Chris Martin performed a secret duet with the late musician, which resulted in the evening’s most memorable and emotional moment.

FAULT was there to witness it all and here’s some of our highlights from inside the music industry’s biggest event of the year.

FAULT Alumni Little Mix opened the show with a futuristic and groundbreaking performance, joined on stage by over 100 backup dancers.

 

Katy Perry made a stir with her controversial mock-up of Theresa May and Donald Trump while one of her backup houses accidentally – walked – off stage.

The Chainsmokers debuted a brand new single with Coldplay that no one knew about.

Chris Martin carried on to pay a touching tribute to George Michael after the former members of Wham! took the stage to pay their respects to the late musician.

 

Robbie Williams closed the evening with a round-up of his most successful tunes.

Not to say that his performance was FAULTless – but we nearly didn’t notice the glitch that forced him to cheer the crowd into singing along. We still loved it Robbie.

 

As awards season is slowly simmering down, we can’t wait to see what 2018 will bring. This year, the abundance of talent was exhuberating and it definitely set the bar higher for the year to come.

Wireless Festival reminds London why it’s a must visit!

 

London’s premier day festival returned to Finsbury Park over the weekend of 8-10 July 2016, with a stellar line up to accompany some stellar weather. Headliners across the weekend included Calvin Harris, The 1975, Chase and Status, Future, Sigma and Boy Better Know, with FAULT Magazine attending the first two days.

A former FAULT cover star, and firm favourite in the office, Miguel graced the main stage on Friday and didn’t disappoint. With his incredible and distinctive voice, Miguel performed with a real energy as he lapped up the crowd’s excitement. With a mix of songs from his latest studio album Wildheart as well as his sophomore album Kaleidoscope Dream, those who basked in the London sunshine were treated to one of R&B’s elite talents hard at work. Miguel took time to address the recent police violence in the USA, with an emotional address for an end to violence. In addition to being an incredible talent, it was touching to see Miguel tearing up while he bared his emotions.

Making their Wireless debut, the 1975 were the chief support act to Calvin Harris and showed why they are one of the hottest bands in the world. With their new album (deep breath) I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it topping both the UK Album Chart and the USA Billboard 200, this was a chance for a lucky crowd to see a band soaring to the top. And they more than delivered. With their ability to deliver instantly catchy songs, the crowd sang along to hits such as ‘Girls’ and ‘The Sound’. Chief support act this year, don’t bet against The 1975 headlining Wireless very soon.

By now it was time for the headline act, and they don’t get much bigger than Calvin Harris. The world’s highest paid DJ (and for good reason) was the main event and was introduced by undisputed A-list star Will Smith. An endless run of hits followed including ‘I Need Your Love’, ‘Summer’, ‘We Found Love’ and this year’s summer anthem ‘This Is What You Came For’. Accompanied by an incredible light show, coinciding with the setting of the sun, it made for a perfect end to day one of the festival.

Day two, and an amazing day at Wireless on Friday only strengthened our desire to get back there for more of the same.

One of the hottest hip hop artists in the world, Future, graced the main stage and whipped the Saturday crowd into a frenzy with his highly respected flow and lyrics. Hits such as ‘Where Ya At’, ‘Wicked’, ‘Jumpman’ and ‘F*ck Up Some Commas’, Future satisfied his huge UK fan base with a lively and passionate performance.

We then headed over to the Pepsi Max Arena to see Sigma perform a live DJ set, with stunning results. The impressive tented area made for an intimate atmosphere, with thousands revelling in the drum and bass tones of the English duo. With the sun still shining, the crowd partied hard to a great atmosphere, and showed how Sigma have deserved the acclaim they’ve received after years in the shadows.

Saturday closed with legends of the drum and bass scene, Chase & Status. Having been on this rodeo throughout their career, the duo had no problem entertaining the crowd, calling up Tempa T and George The Poet to supplement their set. Closing with ‘Blind Faith’, it turned out our faith in Chase & Status’ headline set was fully justified.

We loved the diversity of the line-up, with Wireless Festival attracting a broad spectrum of artists and with that, people attending the festival. An incredible weekend came to a close for us, just wishing we could have made Sunday as well.

SUNDARA KARMA RELEASE NEW TRACK ‘A YOUNG UNDERSTANDING’ – EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH FAULT ONLINE

 

Reading’s golden boys Sundara Karma have only just unveiled their new single ‘A Young Understanding’. The indie-pop quartet has seen undeniable success over the past year with only just two EPs under their belt and things seem to be getting bigger and better for the boys. They haven’t even released an album yet and they’re already set to globetrot around Europe’s festivals on the same bill as Years and Years, The 1975 and many other household names. It’s difficult not to label them as the next big thing. We caught up with Oscar Lulu, Sundara’s lead singer, and we’re tempted to say that England’s new wave is in safe hands.

You’ve just finished recording your first album. What can you give away?

I can give away that it’s done and that we’re proud of it. It’s a really weird and difficult thing to say. To be honest, I don’t really want to say it. I find it difficult letting things go.

Have you done anything different with the album or is it going to be a continuity of what you’ve released so far?

We’ve released two EPs and I think the album is just going to be an evolution from those two EPs. Our second EP was a progression from our first EP and I think the album will just be a natural progression from the two combined. If you’re fans of the EPs, you’ll be fans of the album. There isn’t a direct distinction.

What’s your production process?

Well, I’m the main writer so it just comes from me singing in my room and messing around, thinking of ideas. Sometimes literature can be a source of inspiration or a certain philosophy that struck a chord.

You’ve also got a tour lined up in March. This is going to be your second headline tour after supporting acts like The Wombats, Wolf Alice and Circa Waves. What do you have in store?

This is going to be our second headline tour, so it should be fun. I couldn’t say what to expect from our shows except for a really good night out. Let’s just say that they’re going to be like an extreme house party.

Let’s talk a bit about what you’ve released so far. Vivienne and Flame are some of your most popular tracks. What can you tell me about those two?

The early versions of both of those tracks were so different to how they sound now, after we’ve recorded. I think there’s something in the four of us. When we come together, we have this unidentifiable quality that suddenly comes to life. So I suppose those two tracks came to life the same as the others. Flame is more of a wake up call. If someone says something, it shouldn’t be taken at face value. There are different possibilities and there is more to life than meets the eye. That’s what Flame is about. As for Vivienne, we like to think of it as a classic love song.

What about the visuals for the tracks? How much input do you get on them?

For Vivienne, I put that together along with the director. We’re hands on with everything we do, creatively speaking. I feel really strongly that as an artist, you can’t be complacent or lazy about it. You need to be on top of all of it. Especially now, with social media and everything, because people never look at an album cover and see just that. It’s got a lot more to do with the music videos or the pictures that you upload on Instagram. It’s a bigger beef rather than just your music.

What was your concept behind the Vivienne video then?

Tragedy and escapism I suppose.

Do you always have a certain thing that you try to convey through your tracks? As you said, they all come across as a form of escapism, from the outside looking in at least.

I think that the broader message within the tracks is hard to define. You know, I’m 20 years old and I’m still young. I don’t feel like an adult. At all actually. Everything is coming from a very young point of view and it’s just my way of seeing the world at this very moment. I’m trying to stay away from mundane, cliché things. What interests me is obsession and ritualism. Love, hate, sex and drugs.

It’s not your job to tell people what to take away from your music, but if it was, what would you want people to take away from it?

Joy or happiness, if you can.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Let It Happen by Tame Impala and 15 Step by Radiohead.

What’s your FAULT?

Impatience.
