Spotify Who We Be paving the way for live music experiences

The music landscape has evolved at a rate of knots over the past few years, with giants such as Spotify and Apple playing a huge part. The boom of subscription services has meant the giants are looking for ways to grab people’s attention, and develop loyalty to their brand. And with that, Spotify have taken a big step in the right direction with their Who We Be live show, hosted at the famous Alexandra Palace in London.

The event at Ally Pally brought together some of the world’s biggest hip-hop, grime and R&B acts, with huge names including Tory Lanez, Craig David and French Montana as part of their Who We Be live show.

The show saw some of the UK’s top talents putting on a treat for their fans, including performances from Ghetts, Lethal Bizzle and Raye.

A personal highlight of the show for me was the appearance of FAULT Magazine #28 cover star Tory Lanez. He performed his biggest songs, with a real energy and verve. Before he was done, there was time for a spot of crowd surfing across the front rows.

Craig David showed why he’s well worth headlining, continuing his remarkable comeback to put on a great performance. He cycled through a few of his classics (7 Days, Fill Me In) alongside some of his new songs, as well as a cover of Robyn’s Show Me Love.

Ending the night was hip-hop heavyweight French Montana. Eagerly anticipated, he played some of his biggest hits such as Unforgettable and No Stylist, and was even able to call upon Stefflon Don and Krept & Konan to help close the show and make it a truly unforgettable night.

The youthful audience were delirious, seeing their favourite acts performing back-to-back-to-back and so on. No waiting around for 30 minutes between acts like you get at some music events. Each act coming up pretty swiftly after the other; as if you’ve streaming it through your earphones, with music being played continuously. It helped add to the live event aspect of what Spotify are trying to achieve, and showed they’re serious about giving people what they want. All their favourite acts delivering their favourite songs for them.

We’d love to see Spotify extend this format out to other playlists they have on their service. And if the Who We Be live shows are anything to go by, they’ll be making the right call.

LSTD 2018 Kicks off British Festival season with a bang

While stateside, Coachella is the place to be to kick off festival season, here in the UK, FAULT tradition is to always start our summer with a trip to Love Saves The Day Festival. Granted, it’s not the usual choice, however, for years we’ve watched the festival grow in both accolades but also in the acts that they pull in to perform.

This year, Fat Boy Slim, Bicep, Tom Misch and FAULT’s very own ‘Raye’ headlined the Saturday billing with Mercury award 2017 rivals Sampha and Loyle Carner topped the billings for the Sunday amongst the likes of Mabel, Mostack, Shy FX many more.

We attended the Saturday dates and as with every year, rain was on the forecast, but also as with every year, not a single drop fell that day, while this is by no means the doing of the organisers…we’re just saying, it’s tradition.

The standout performances of the day definitely go to festival veterans, ‘Bicep’ who never fail to give a standup performance year after year and they’re always a crowdpleaser which could account for their regular attendance every LSTD.

Of course, it must be said that previous FAULT star Raye was sensational on the day. Her career might still be in its infancy, but her discography is electric enough to keep the crowd well and truly pleased.

As night fell, it was time for the legendary Fat Boy Slim to take to close the festival. All in attendance gathered around the main stage for what was billed to be the closing performance of ALL closing performances, and we can say with some authority that he lived up to the hype. With a city as diverse as Bristol is, LSTD tends to draw a crowd of varying ages and as much as it pains us to say, we weren’t quite as sure just how wise it was to end with such a seasoned artist but we were certainly proved wrong! The crowd, in its entirety, went wild and partied together under the moonlight right there, right then, for the perfect closing to an awesome day out.

And just like that, another year down and another year the organisers of LSTD knocked it out the park (the Eastville Park if you will). So, would we recommend LSTD to our hardcore music fan readers? Yes! While it might not be the most “alternative” nor is it a festival which takes itself too seriously (neither does the crowd), one thing is for certain – if you’re looking for a good time, great crowd and wonderful music – Love Saves The Day is the place for you.

FAULT Magazine attends the MTV Brand New Big Reveal @ Tape London

Last night, FAULT were in attendance for the reveal of the MTV Brand New 2017 shortlist. Hosted at Tape London, FAULTFave Becca Dudley revealed MTV Brand New’s top tips for stardom in 2017. Chosen by industry experts, one shouldn’t take this list for granted; Last year saw FAULT #20 star Anne-Marie crowned champion and as they say, the rest is history.

AJ Tracey and Nadia Rose both performed captivating sets, displaying the raw talent that landed them a place on the list for 2017. Other shortlisted artists attendance included JP Cooper, Raye, Disciples, Ray Blk, Stefflon Don and Tom Grennan.

It’s no secret that cracking the music industry is extremely difficult and we at FAULT are fully supportive of the opportunities provided to emerging artists from the folks down at MTV Brand New. Over the years, they have at varying levels supported many of the artists who have appeared in the pages of FAULT Magazine or FAULT Online. FAULT Alumni, Ellie Goulding, The Vamps, Ella Eyre and Conor Maynard have all been supported by MTV Brand New and it’s wonderful to see their continued commitment to supporting new talents.
Early next year, MTV UP! Energy Drinks will be hosting a showcase before the winner of 2017 is revealed. Until then, we’ll be waiting with baited breath for the big reveal.
